You Cannot Fool Mother Nature But You Can Understand Her: A Lecture by James Urban
Co-sponsored with New York Restoration Project
The Arsenal, 830 Fifth Avenue at 64th Street, New York, NY 10021

Trees need large quantities of healthy soil in order to grow. Providing for these requirements is difficult and expensive in urban landscapes. James Urban, FASLA, specializes in the design of trees and soils in urban spaces. He has written and lectured extensively on the subject of urban tree planting and has been responsible for the introduction of many innovations including most of the current standards relating to urban tree plantings. This lecture will discuss the critical aspects of the relationships of soil, trees, and water, and will enhance understanding and implementation of the ASLA Sustainable Sites Initiative.

Fee: ASLA members: $15; Nonmembers: $20

Olmsted and America’s Urban Parks: Movie & Panel Discussion
Co-sponsored with The Horticultural Society of New York

The Horticultural Society of New York
148 West 37th Street, New York, NY 10018

Join us in an early celebration of the birthday (April 26) of Frederick Law Olmsted, the visionary urban planner and landscape architect who designed New York City’s Central Park with Calvert Vaux. Olmsted spent the latter half of his life devoting nearly every waking minute to creating restorative green spaces for overworked city dwellers. This one-hour documentary by Rebecca Messner, Olmsted and America's Urban Parks, explores the formation of America’s first great city parks in the late 19th century through Olmsted’s enigmatic eyes.

Biographer Justin Martin, Sara Cedar Miller, official historian and photographer for the Central Park Conservancy, and Charles McKinney, principal urban designer at the New York City’s Department of Parks & Recreation, will discuss the life and lasting masterpieces of this enigmatic man.

The LAF's Landscape Performance Series will be explained and, with lessons learned from this process, advice on how best to quantify your own landscapes' sustainability will be presented. Greg will focus in on successful case studies from around the world, gleaming lessons learned to transfer these successes into other projects.  Design as well as community engagement techniques will be covered, providing a full spectrum on considerations to achieve a successful sustainable project.  As with all of the High-Performance Lecture Series, these talks will be followed by a cocktail reception, allowing speakers and attendees to network and discuss these concepts further.

Recreation: A Central Park Walk Led by Jon Cotner

Co-sponsored with The Horticultural Society of New York

Starting Point: Southwest Corner of Sheep Meadow

“The primary purpose of Central Park is to provide the best practicable means of recreation for the inhabitants of all classes.” –Frederick Law Olmsted

Recreation is a new interactive walk designed by Jon Cotner. To celebrate National Landscape Architecture Month, as well as the legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted, Cotner will lead dialogues with participants as they stroll through Central Park. Olmsted’s architectural philosophy will be put into play, bringing everyone closer to the Park’s physical and social landscapes.

Jon Cotner is an artist and poet. His work revives the ancient, endangered practices of walking and talking. Recent projects for the  BMW Guggenheim Lab, Elastic City, and the Poetry Society of America have been praised by Bookforum, The New Yorker, and The Wall Street Journal. Cotner is the author, with Andy Fitch, of Ten Walks/Two Talks. He lives in Brooklyn, NY, and teaches at Pratt Institute.

Fee: Members (ASLA, Hort) $10; Nonmembers $15

There will be eight participants per walk, so preregistration is required
